Clear Lake is a small village in Sangamon County, Illinois. At the time of the 2000 census, the town had a population of 267 people.
It is a part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area in Illinois.

Clear Lake Township, located directly east of Springfield Township, encompasses the whole region (36 square miles) inside governmental township 16 N., R. 4 W. It takes its name from Clear Lake in Section 22, along the Sangamon River’s banks.
The township is about evenly split between prairie and wood, and the surface is hilly and, in some cases, somewhat broken as the Sangamon River flows crosswise through it from the southeastern to the northwest corner.
It has the biggest population of any rural township inside the county, second only to Capital Township because it includes Riverton, the county’s largest village corporation outside of Springfield.

The township is highly watered, as demonstrated by the Sangamon River’s path through it.
Sugar Creek and the South Fork of the Sangamon enter the North Fork (or major branch) of the Sangamon at the township’s center, although other smaller tributaries of the mainstream may be found elsewhere.
Clear Lake is a half-mile-long sliver of water located on the east bank of the Sangamon River and flowing parallel to it.
Several resorts have been built to accommodate guests, and it is the site of frequent picnic groups from Springfield and the surrounding area throughout the summer months.
It is accessible through a suburban car line, and it has hosted a number of successful Chautauquas in recent years.

Hugh McGary, a soldier serving Gen. William Henry Harrison, was the first resident in what became Clear Lake Township, arriving in 1820 and settling on the shores of Clear Lake.
Harrison McGary, his brother, arrived at the same time but only stayed for a short time before returning to Indiana.
Around the same era as the McGarys, Samuel Danley arrived and settled around a mile away from Hugh McGary.
